The more information that comes out regarding distracted driving namely drivers who use cell phones behind the wheel the more were convinced that most of us are hypocrites. Case in point, the results of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations first national survey on distracted driving, which were released at the end of December 2011.

The NHTSA administered their survey via telephone to 6,002 respondents, 18 years of age and older. 4,877 respondents were using landline phones, and 1,125 were using cellular phones. The results of this self-reported study are an eye-opener.

Over the past 40 years, an interesting transition has been taking place on American roads, namely the composition of drivers and the mix of their ages. In 1983, half of all drivers on the road were under the age of 40. Now drivers under 40 make up less than 40 percent of all on the road.

During the same period of time, the number of drivers under the age of 30 has experienced a similar precipitous drop. If we traveled back to 1983, wed find that approximately 33 percent of all drivers were under 30.

According to the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association , the most common reason for crashes is dangerous behavior. In fact, 98 percent of ATV crashes are a result of dangerous behavior, behaviors that operator manuals specifically warn against.
