Buying a guaranteed issue life insurance policy has its pros and cons. These life insurance policies are not the best option for most people. Buying the wrong type of policy can cost you more than it should.

You will probably pay less and get a better policy if they purchase a standard or medically underwritten policy. Even if you take a few medications or have some medical conditions, you should consider guaranteed issue life insurance, no exam life insurance and simplified issued life insurance only after you have been denied a standard policy. These policies are almost always more expensive.

Most people qualify for less expensive medically underwritten policies.

Quotes »With the adoption of the Medicare modernized plans in June, Plan F will now be the most comprehensive plan available for purchase.  The modernized version of Plan F differs very little from the former standardized plan that was available with effective dates up to May 31, 2010.

Plan F was already quite popular and should remain so due to its affordability in most states.  When deciding which gap insurance is best for you however, it is important to know more about the rules and regulations in your home state.

Medicare Part B Excess Coverage

Not all states allow medical facilities to charge a Part B excess fee.  If your home state, or one that you spend a great deal of time in does, then it is a wise idea to purchase a plan that covers this benefit.  Plans F and G are the only two Medicare supplements covering Part B excess after June 1.

If you incurred a Part B excess charge of 15% on a significant medical claim and you did not have Plan F or G, then you would be responsible for significant out of pocket expenses.  For instance, if you had a $150,000 Part B medical claim, the 15% excess charge would amount to a $22,500 out of pocket charge to you.

While this may be a rare instance, it is not implausible.  It is wise to check the Part B rules of your home state or other states where you spend parts of the year before purchasing any Medigap plan.

If your home state does not allow for this charge, then most other plans should be considered as well.  Plan F will be the most comprehensive and therefore the most expensive.  It is important to note however that Plan F does not typically cost significantly more on a monthly basis than similar coverages like C, D, and G.

Medicare Part A and Part B Deductibles

Plan F fully covers both Part A and B deductible amounts as well as Part B coinsurance at 100%.  Coverage for a foreign travel emergency is included as well as preventive care coinsurance.  It is important to know that all modernized plans will be required to cover preventive care coinsurance.

Plan F Network and Select Plans Limitations

Almost all supplemental insurance plans have no network restrictions. As long as your

Before you can buy inexpensive medical insurance with confidence you will need to do a little research. There are some strategies you can use to avoid paying too much. There are three main steps. The first step is learning how health insurance policies work. The second involves shopping around. The third step is to compare the policies.

In order to compare health insurance policies, you should learn how they work. Knowing how health insurance deductibles, copays and coinsurance work is crucial.

Here are some resources to get you started:

  • What is a health insurance deductible
  • Understanding health insurance copayments
  • Coinsurance definition
  • Health insurance stop loss or out-of-pocket maximum

Once you have a basic understanding of how insurance policies work, you should then start to shop around.

The Atlantic basin could be in for an above-average hurricane season this year with four major hurricanes forecast to develop in the region, according to forecasters at Colorado State University.

The forecast team of William Gray, who has led the forecast team for 27 years, and Phil Klotzbach, lead forecaster on the university hurricane forecast team, released their predictions for the 2010 hurricane season, running June 1 to Nov. 30.

The team predicts 15 named storms will form in the Atlantic.

In a New Orleans case a trial judge entered an order on March 26, holding the pollution exclusion in a homeowners insurance policy does not apply to damage done by Chinese drywall.  In holding that the exclusion does not apply the court noted

The POL [pollution and contamination] exclusion does not and was never intended, to apply to residential homeowners claims for damages caused by substandard building materials.  The Louisiana Department of Insurance determined that a ‘pollution incident’ under a pollution exclusion in homeowners’ policies only refers to an incident which causes ‘environmental damage,’ or ‘injurious [to the environment, not the claimant] presence in and upon the land, the atmosphere, or any watercourse or body of water of solid, liquid, gaseous or thermal contaminants, irritants or pollutants.’  [citation omitted].

The fact that Chinese drywall releases various gases into the home is not sufficient to qualify as a ‘pollutant’ under the pollution exclusion….

Get a Quote »Medicare supplement insurance Plans M and N will be available for purchase with effective dates of June 1, 2010 and beyond.  These two new plans offer attractive coverage for those willing to exchange lower monthly premiums for higher out of pocket expenses.

Both M and N are cost sharing plans.  The insured will be responsible for additional out of pocket expenses when compared to Plans C, D, F and G.  In this way, they will work somewhat like Medicare Advantage coverage, but unlike Advantage plans there will be no network restrictions for the insured.

This means that you are free to visit any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare patients.  The freedom from having to operate within a small network of health care providers will be a distinct advantage for Plans M and N.

Plan N Offered on a Guaranteed Issue Basis

The good news is that at least one insurance company will offer Plan N on a guaranteed issue basis in most states.  This will be very beneficial for those who live in a state that does not offer a yearly open enrollment window and have tried unsuccessfully to be medically underwritten for a new Medicare supplement.  Plan M may require underwriting with most companies.

Plan N Highlights:

  • Fully Covers All Medicare Basic Benefits
  • $20 Copayment for Office Visits
  • $50 Copayment for ER visits
  • Fully Covers Part A Deductible – $1,100 in 2010
  • Does Not Cover Part B Deductible – $155 in 2010
  • Does Not Cover Part B Excess
  • Issued on a Guaranteed Basis w/ Some Providers

Plan M Highlights:

  • Fully Covers All Medicare Basic Benefits
  • No Copayments for Office or ER Visits
  • Cover 50% of Part A Deductible
  • Does Not Cover Part B Deductible
  • Does Not Cover Part B Excess

Part B Excess Coverage

It is important to note that many states (Ohio and Pennsylvania for example) do not allow doctors to charge for Part B excess.  If you live in one of these states and plan on maintaining a residence there, then you need not worry about this benefit.  If you live in a state that does allow for these charges, then be aware that you could have higher out of pocket expenses should you choose a supplement that does not cover Part B excess.

Plan M and N Insurance Providers

There are several supplemental providers offering either Plan M, N, or both through independent agents.  Depending on your state and zip code of residence there will be a handful of competitive providers in your area.  As of now, Mutual of Omaha, Assured Life, Family Life, Gerber Life, Loyal American, Anthem, United Healthcare AARP, and a few others are offering affordable coverage in several states.

In summary, both Medicare supplement plans M and N will be cost effective ways to cover most of what Original Medicare Parts A and B do not.  When coupled with a prescription Part D drug plan, you will have all four components needed for complete coverage.  And should you decide that you would like a Medigap plan with less or no cost sharing, then Plans C, D, F, and G will still be available after June 1, 2010.
